Why do I torture myself with these things...

For 12 years, Beloit College publishes an article about the mindset of their current year's upcoming freshman class. Quite interesting since it is history and a part of my history. However, I can recall a bit further back, these people only know of what I experience through second-hand. Their mindset is different because of the fact they had cds where as I actually used cassette tape. They know Reagan as a former-President rather than a one who was in office.

From the site:
"The Mindset List is not a chronological listing of things that happened in 1991, the year they were born. It is instead an effort to identify the worldview of 18 year-olds in the fall of 2009. Of course, our students come from many backgrounds and different traditions and these generalizations may not apply to all. The list identifies the experiences and event horizons of students and is not meant to reflect on their preparatory education."
Click-y to relish in history and glimpse into the mind of someone born 1991. How would your view of the world be different if you had only their experiences?

This Week in Music: 15 years ago. or Really!? This song is 15 years old!

Ah! To be 15 again; when puberty has taken a stranglehold of you. Your voice is changing, your body is changing, you are not popular because your chubby... oh wait that was me. Well these songs are now 15 years old, and I think they are doing great considering they are transitioning from new songs into old songs. Well, I guess how the music is constantly changing it's more like older song to old songs *sigh*

Amazing how these guys are now Giant superstars with two cds that are both Rock Operas. Green Day - Basket Case

I have to admit I haven't heard this song, but it was number one in the Dance Chart . So here ya go! k.d. lang - Lifted By Love

And of course one of many songs from the Reality Bites soundtrack. I must say I heart Reality Bites, it gave me a sense of generational identity. Lisa Loeb - Stay (I Missed You)

Should I heed my fortune cookie's advise?

And does this apply to the "... in bed" rule too!

Biggest Win / Biggest Fail (08/22/09)

Charts have come out and Lady Gaga is failing in the dance chart. Sad, nobody wants to know that she wants to ride on our disco stick and we don't want to Do the Helen Keller anymore with 3OH!3's Don't Trust Me.

Biggest Win:
  • Muse - Uprising
  • Jet - She's a Genius
  • U2 - I'll Go Crazy If I don't go crazy Tonight
  • Madonna - Celebration
  • Shakira - She Wolf
  • Ralphi Rosario - Everybody Shake It
  • Jay Sean - Down
  • Pitbull - Hotel Room Service
  • Kings of Leon - Use Somebody

Biggest Fail -
  • Taking Back Sunday - Sink into me
  • The Offspring - Half-Truism
  • Blue October - Say It
  • U2 - Magnificent
  • Gia Bella - Back it Up
  • Lady Gaga - Love Game
  • Wanted - Jesse James
  • Jeremih - Birthday Sex
  • 3OH!3 - Dont Trust Me

I recommend:
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Hysteric. Yeah yeah yeah, the supposed saying in New York City vernacular telling us to hurry up or some such thing... whatever. In all seriousness, I really enjoy the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Back when MTV2 didn't suck as bad as MTV, I saw an interview with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and just had to keep on listening.

Modest Mouse - Satellite Skin. It's good to live in Seattle especially when we have a little band called Modest Mouse. They hail from Issaquah (I-suh-KWAH) where I work!

Listening to Uprising By Muse or Why didn't I get into them earlier?!

By now, all the alternative stations across the US have started playing Muse's Uprising. From the first few chords, I was hooked. It sounds heavy and dark from the start and then the vocals move from that tone to a more melodic ethereal sound and back. It just makes me think about watching my back down a dark alley.

I wondered why I didn't get into them earlier. Especially since
Assassin on Guitar Hero: World Tour was a great song. Just try to get it perfect even on medium. Something in the back of my head told me I dug them before but I just could not remember any song. Good ol' wikipedia led me to what I needed. I heard Supermassive Black Hole and Time is Running out, but there were others I did not hear. More than likely they didn't get much airplay around here, but I would think an city that brought up grunge and has a great alt/indy scene would play more of this stuff, but I digress.

One song that has me hooked right now is
Hysteria. The video is a great extension of the song. It catches the mood and emotion quite well. With MTV no longer playing MUSIC videos, I'm forced to find them on the internet, but that's alright good music and good visualization equals a satisfied me.

Go ahead and pre-order the new album at Muse's website. Their first track does not disappoint and despite my need to catch up on their stuff, from what I got so far I can say with enthusiasm, that I want this next one coming up.
